Howard Melching

These are a few pictures of Squint Westwood in his Old West Garb. He belongs to the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS), which is a national/international organization that promotes the Old West and shooting sports associated with it. SASS rules stipulate a persona and clothing based either upon history or some B-Western character. Shooting matches are composed of several stages which are individual scenarios that reflect the Old West.  The participants must say and do certain things, shoot and hit steel targets, and the score reflects the accuracy and speed that the shooter can do all those things.  Live ammunition is used in all of these events, and quick-draw is not allowed for safety reasons.

Squint also belongs to the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association (CMSA), which performs barrel-racing and shooting from horseback, and the Ute Trail Muzzle Loaders, which holds contents of mountain man skills: shooting, fire starting, tomahawk throwing, etc.
